Conduit fill is governed by CEC Rule 12-910 and Table 8 of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. The rule limits how much of a raceway's internal cross-sectional area the conductors may occupy, so that wires can dissipate heat and be pulled without damage.

The method
1. Add up the total cross-sectional area of every conductor (CEC Table 6 gives the area of each conductor including insulation).
2. Divide by the internal area of the conduit (CEC Table 9 / Table 10) to get the fill percentage.
3. Compare against the Table 8 limit for your conductor count. If you're over, step up to the next conduit trade size.

What is the maximum conduit fill allowed in Canada?
Under CEC Rule 12-910 and Table 8: 53% for one conductor, 31% for two, and 40% for three or more. A short nipple (600 mm or less) may go to 60%.
How many #12 RW90 wires fit in 1/2" EMT?
1/2" (16 mm) EMT has about 196 mm² internal area, so roughly 78 mm² is usable at the 40% limit. A #12 RW90 conductor is about 11.4 mm², so about six #12 RW90 conductors fit. Enter your exact mix above to confirm.
